Sometimes it is clear that an institution transcends the business in which it is engaged. Almost no one is neutral about Wal-Mart. To some, it is the salvation of the common man. To others, it is the pinnacle of corporate greed. Generally, the only place those people see each other is in an aisle at a Wal-Mart store. They may see each other there, but they don't often stop and chat. |

If you are the average American, whatever or whoever that is, you go to Wal-Mart about once a week. You buy at least shampoo, laundry detergent, toothpaste, and deodorant. Some of us fill two carts with everything we need to keep our households running. The primary difference is one of scale. We can do that because, whether or not we agree with the corporate philosophy, Wal-Mart delivers the goods.

Wal-Mart claims to have the lowest prices in town. Other retailers dispute that claim. Wal-Mart claims to be a community oriented company. Reams have been written in opposition to that belief. Wal-Mart claims to be employee and family-friendly. Complete books have been written and several documentaries have been taped to refute those claims. The truth undoubtedly lies somewhere in the middle. Maybe we can find it in Lawrence, which is just about in the middle of the Wal-Mart empire.
If ever a Web page should engender second opinions, it will be a Web page about Wal-Mart. A few inches up from this sentence is a bright red button marked "Write" just to the right of the label "Second Opinions. Click on that "Write" button and give us a second opinion about Wal-mart. |
